Getting customers to buy from your store is great!
But getting customers to buy multiple or bulk items from your store — even better. How? Offer them the best deals to buy in bigger volumes.
So, let’s talk about Shopify volume discounts — a strategy that can not only increase your average order value (AOV) but also the overall revenue and profits.
This blog post will help you with a complete guide on how to create volume discounts on Shopify and the best Shopify apps for volume discounts.
Let’s start with some basics first!
A volume discount is a promotional strategy in which customers are offered a special discount when they purchase more or bulk quantities from your Shopify store.
That’s why it’s also known as a “quantity discount”.
In other words, as the customer purchases a higher volume of an item, the price per unit is reduced with either a percentage discount or a fixed amount.
The main goal of this strategy is to encourage customers to buy more from your brand. It can help you increase the average order value (AOV) and overall revenue. Also, when a customer purchases multiple items in a single order instead of separate/repeated orders, the customer can save on the shipping cost as well.
Here’s an example explaining how the volume discounts work:
As you can see in the example when a customer buys 3 items instead of one — the customer is able to get a 20% discount and save $6 on the order. This is enticing for customers to go buy more quantity and save money.
Offering volume discounts could help your business in the following ways:
Since it encourages your customers to purchase in higher volumes, it significantly increases your order value. For example, a customer who’s looking to buy a single item at $25 may go on to buy three items at $60 if you’re offering a 20% discount upon buying a set of three.
The more you encourage customers to buy higher volume, the more growth can be seen in your overall sales and revenue too. Thus, it can help your business grow and scale at a faster rate.
This can be an effective strategy to bring new visitors to your store. With the right marketing and promotional strategies, you can attract new customers and expand your customer base.
Every business owner wants to clear the inventory as soon as possible and bring in fresh new stock. However, sometimes, the sales can slow down. If you’re at the risk of getting the stock outdated in a few months, you can implement such a strategy to get the stock sold out in a timely fashion.
Now, let’s go through the step-by-step tutorial to creating Shopify volume discounts.
Your discount strategy has to be a well-thought-out business decision.
You can’t simply offer a 10-20% discount just because others are offering the same discount or based on your gut feeling.
Research your customers and competitors. Analyze the historical data and current trends about the market demand for the product(s).
After the research and analysis, you must also consider all the aspects related to your cost of production or product sourcing, marketing and advertising cost, gross and net profit margins, etc. After all, you don’t want to end up making a loss with your volume discount strategy.
Finalize a pricing strategy that allows you to keep a healthy profit margin.
Once you’ve finalized the strategy, it’s time to research and choose an app of your choice from the Shopify App Store. Finalize an app that meets your requirements and budget.
For this tutorial, we’ll go with the “Rapi Bundle Quantity Breaks” app. It’s a completely free app with amazing reviews from hundreds of merchants.
Click the Install button and proceed with the installation.
Review the access permissions and click the Install button.
As soon as the app is installed, you’ll need to configure one of the settings in your current theme to enable the app. Click on the Activate button.
You’ll be redirected to your currently installed theme — and the Rapi app will automatically be enabled in the “App embeds” section in the left sidebar. You just need to click the Save button to confirm the changes
Now, your app is ready to start creating volume discount offers. Click on the “Add Bundle Blocks” button.
Then, choose whether you’d like to create “Mix and Match product bundles” or “Quantity breaks” with volume discounts. We’ll go with the second option and click on the “Create the deal” button.
Now, you can create and customize your bundle offer and its widget that will appear on your product page(s). You can toggle between all the options given at the top:
Block, Offers, Font & size, and Colors.
Remember — it’s important to select whether you want to publish this volume discount offer on all products or selected ones only. We’ll just keep them as default just for the sake of this guide.
Scroll down and configure other settings as well. Once everything’s set up, click the Publish button to make the volume discount offer live on your store.
Once you hit the publish button, you’ll see an “Important Notice” pop-up in your app admin.
Review your product pages where you've activated the volume discount offers. If you find any price inconsistency issues, you need to check if other product bundling apps or discounts are overlapping with your Rapi volume discount offer.
As you can see in the below screenshot, the volume discount is configured on our test store.
You can/should go even a step further, and create some test orders to check if everything’s working fine. This will ensure you can eliminate any potential issue before it impacts any real customer transaction.
Pro tip: Once it’s all good to go, start promoting your volume discount offers on your social media, email newsletter, and any other marketing channels you prefer. You may also create paid ad campaigns depending on your budget. Make sure to highlight the benefits to your customers with appealing visuals and compelling copy.
Once you’ve put the volume discount strategy in implementation, regularly monitor and analyze the sales and conversions.
You must evaluate how it’s helping your business in terms of sales as well as average order value. Based on the data and observations, you may decide whether the strategy needs to be continued or requires changes.
Depending on the seasons and shopping events, you can also customize your discount strategy or come up with a completely new one to surprise your customers.
