Shopify Support in 2026: All 4 Official Channels, and What They Won't Fix

If you run a Shopify store, sooner or later something breaks, and you need a human. The problem is that most guides to Shopify support list channels that no longer exist, so you spend twenty minutes looking for an email address that Shopify stopped offering on your plan.

This guide covers the four channels Shopify actually documents in 2026, which ones your plan gets, how to reach a person instead of the AI, and the nine things support will not do no matter how nicely you ask.

Key Takeaways

  • Shopify documents four support channels, not six. AI Search and live chat are open to every plan. Phone and email are gated to Plus, Retail, and POS Pro.

  • There is no public Shopify support email address. Email is a ticket form inside the Help Center and only for Plus and Retail.

  • Social media is not a documented support channel. Reporting a problem on Facebook or X is not the same as opening a ticket.

  • You have to be logged into your store to reach a human advisor, and AI Search comes first in the flow.

  • Support does not write custom code, edit your checkout, add fonts, or troubleshoot third-party apps and themes. Knowing that in advance saves you a wasted chat.

What is Shopify Support?

Shopify support is the set of channels Shopify provides to help merchants fix problems with their store. Some are self-service, like the Help Center and its AI search. Others put you in front of a person, either in chat or, on higher plans, on the phone.

The distinction that matters most is not fast versus slow. It is in scope versus out of scope. Shopify support covers the platform: billing, your account, order and payment problems, and its own free themes and apps. Custom code, design work and anything built by a third party sit outside that line, and no channel will move the line for you.

Here is what each channel does, and which plans get it.

Where You Can Contact Shopify Support

Shopify's own contact page lists four channels. Two are open to everyone and two depend on your plan:

Channel Who gets it Speed Best for

AI Search in the Help Center

Everyone

Instant, 24/7

Documented questions and the first step in the official flow

Live chat with an advisor

Everyone, 24/7

Queue, wait time shown

Anything urgent that AI Search could not answer

Phone or callback

Plus, Retail, POS Pro only

Direct line on Plus

Complex issues that are painful to type out

Email ticket

Plus and Retail only

Around 48 hours

Non-urgent issues that need attachments

Community forums sit alongside these four, but Shopify does not count them as official support. More on that below.

AI Search in the Help Center

The Shopify Help Center now opens with an AI search box, and Shopify treats it as step one. Its own wording is direct about the order of operations: the fastest way to get help is to start with AI-powered search before reaching out to a human advisor.

This is worth knowing rather than resenting. Documentation questions genuinely do get answered here, and it is the only part of Shopify support that is guaranteed available around the clock, every day of the year. The Help Center is also organised by topic, so if you would rather browse than ask, the section on order management and fulfilment covers shipping setup end to end.

Live Chat With a Human Advisor

Screenshot of the Shopify Live Chat feature.

Live chat is open to every plan, but you have to be signed in to your store to reach an advisor.

Live chat is available on every plan, 24 hours a day. Getting to it takes two steps that trip people up.

  1. In the Help Center, look for the Chat with a human button in the bottom-right corner. It is no longer labelled "Contact Support".

  2. Sign in to your store. Shopify is explicit that you must be logged into your store to connect with a Support advisor, so chatting from a logged-out browser will not work.

You then join a queue with an estimated wait shown. Have your store URL and the exact error message ready, because the first thing an advisor does is reproduce what you saw.

Phone Support and Callbacks

Phone support exists, but not for most stores. Shopify states plainly that you cannot request a callback or phone Shopify directly unless your store is on the Shopify Plus plan or the Retail plan, or uses Shopify POS Pro. Plus merchants get a direct line to Plus Support advisors.

If you are on Basic, Grow or Advanced, there is no number to call and no callback to request. Live chat is the equivalent, and it is the reason chat queues matter more than they used to.

Email Support (Plus and Retail Only)

There is no public Shopify support email address. This is the single most common piece of outdated advice about Shopify support, and following it wastes real time.

Shopify's requirement is specific: for email support, your store must be on the Shopify Plus plan or the Retail plan. Merchants who qualify submit tickets through the Help Center rather than by writing to an address, with responses typically arriving within about 48 hours. Because the format handles attachments well, it suits anything that needs screenshots, exports or a recording to explain.

If your plan does not include email, do not wait on a reply that is not coming. Use chat.

Community Forums (Not Official Support)

Screenshot of the Shopify Community web page.

The community forums are useful for code and design questions that official support will not touch.

The Shopify Community is not an official support channel, and that is exactly why it is useful. The questions support declines to answer, particularly custom code and theme modifications, are the ones the forums handle best.

Two practical notes. The forums moved to a new platform, so older links you find in Google may point to read-only legacy boards. And answers come from other merchants and partners, not Shopify staff, so treat code you copy from a thread as unverified. Shopify says the same thing more bluntly: it will not troubleshoot third-party code, and that includes code from forums.

Sidekick and the Developer Assistant

Two AI tools sit outside the Help Center and get missed. Sidekick is the assistant built into your Shopify admin, useful for questions about your own store data and settings rather than general how-to. On shopify.dev, the .dev assistant answers code and API questions, which is the closest thing to official help for the code questions support will not take.

Neither replaces a human advisor. Both are faster than a chat queue when the question is one they can answer.

What Shopify Support Does Well

Support gets criticized a lot, some of it fairly. Three things it genuinely does well are worth knowing so you use it for the right jobs.

Platform Problems Get Fixed Properly

Anything that is Shopify's own responsibility is where support is strongest. Billing questions, account access, payment processing, order and fulfillment problems, and its own free themes and apps all sit inside scope, and advisors can act on them rather than just advise.

Chat Is Available Around the Clock

Chat runs 24 hours a day on every plan, which matters if you sell across time zones or hit a checkout problem at 2 am. One qualification, because it is easy to misread: Shopify guarantees round-the-clock availability most explicitly for AI Search. Live chat is listed as 24/7 too, but you still join a queue, and you still have to be signed in to your store first.

Escalation on Third-Party Apps Actually Happens

Support will not fix a third-party app, but it does not drop the thread either. Shopify's documented process is that it contacts you three days after routing you to an app developer to check whether the issue was resolved, and if it was not, it contacts the developer again on your behalf. That follow-up is not well known, and it is worth using.

What Shopify Support Can Help You With

Website Setup

A computer screen showing the Shopify official website.

Shopify support is able to assist you in setting up your website.

Support can walk you through the mechanics of getting a store live: connecting a domain, installing a free Shopify theme, creating pages, and setting up navigation. Ask process questions here, and you will get useful answers.

What it will not do is make design decisions for you or build anything custom. The line falls between "How do I add a page?" and "Make this page look like that," and it falls there consistently.

Technical Support

Get up-to-date technical support from Shopify to ensure a functional and reliable store.

Login problems, account access, and platform errors are squarely in scope, and chat is the right channel for them. Bring the exact error text rather than a description of it.

Store speed is where expectations need managing. Support can point you to what is slowing a digital storefront down, usually apps and oversized images. Acting on that diagnosis, if it means changing the theme code, is not something they will do for you.

General Order Management

Order problems are squarely in scope for Shopify Support, and chat is the right channel for them.

Orders are one of the areas where support is genuinely strong, because the data sits on Shopify's side. Processing, fulfillment, cancellations, refunds, and returns are all in scope, and an advisor can look at the specific order with you.

The exception is fulfillment handled by a third-party app or 3PL. That goes back to the provider, not to Shopify.

Payment Issues

Ensure precision in payment for your buyers by utilizing Shopify support.

Payment problems are worth escalating early, because every hour of a broken checkout is lost revenue. Support handles gateway setup, failed transactions, payout questions and currency configuration, and Shopify Payments issues in particular are fully theirs to fix.

Third-party gateways are a different matter. Shopify can confirm the connection is configured correctly, but a decline coming from the provider goes back to the provider.

Theme and Layout Problems

Screenshot of the Shopify Themes Store.

If your website experiences theme and layout problems, take them to Shopify support for a quick fix.

This is the section where expectations and reality diverge most, so it is worth being precise.

Shopify offers up to 60 minutes of complimentary design support from the Basic plan up, tracked in 15-minute increments. It applies to free Shopify themes only, and only to a set of predefined customizations. Its own design policy draws the line in one sentence: Shopify Support does not write custom code or make arbitrary code changes. Adding new fonts and editing images are both on the list of things it will not do.

If you bought a paid theme, support comes from the theme developer rather than from Shopify. And theme developers do not do customizations either, which is the gap most merchants fall into. Shopify's own answer is to hire a Shopify Partner.

Once your 60 minutes are gone and you still need a different layout, you have two realistic routes. Bring in help, which is what our roundup of Shopify CRO experts and agencies is for. Or change the page yourself without touching theme code, which is what a page builder like GemPages is for. Neither is better in the abstract: a one-off structural change is usually cheaper to hand over, while pages you expect to keep testing are cheaper to own.

App Integrations

Screenshot of the Shopify App Store.

The Shopify App Store houses many third-party apps that can be integrated with your website.

The routing rule here is simple and catches people out constantly. Shopify supports apps made by Shopify. For anything from the Shopify App Store built by a third-party developer, you contact that developer directly.

That covers app errors, how to use app features, adding app code to your theme, and disputing an app charge. Shopify is explicit that it also does not support apps downloaded from a developer's own website rather than the App Store.

In practice, this means the fastest help for an app problem is that app's own channel, not Shopify's. Most established apps run their own help center and live chat, ours included. And as noted above, Shopify does follow up after three days if the developer has not resolved things.

Security Concerns

An example of a secured website with a padlock symbol next to its URL.

Any time a security concern emerges, you can contact Shopify Support to get it resolved in a timely manner.

Account security is well covered. The Help Center walks through two-factor authentication, staff permissions, and activity monitoring, and support can help if you are locked out or see logins you do not recognize.

Treat suspected account compromise as urgent and go straight to chat rather than working through documentation first.

What Shopify Support Won't Do, and Who to Ask Instead

Shopify publishes this list, but it is buried in a design policy page most merchants never open. Knowing it in advance is the difference between a five-minute chat and a wasted afternoon:

What you need

Shopify Support?

Who actually handles it

Billing, account access, platform errors

Yes

Shopify Support, via chat

Order, refund and payout problems

Yes

Shopify Support, via chat

Free Shopify theme, predefined changes

Partly

Up to 60 minutes of design support, Basic plan and up

Editing the checkout

No

Shopify Plus, or Checkout Extensibility with a developer

Custom code, or a theme with significant code changes

No

A Shopify Partner or developer

Paid or third-party theme support

No

The theme developer

Customizing a paid theme

No

A Shopify Partner. Theme developers do not do this either

Third-party app errors and app code

No

The app developer, with Shopify following up after 3 days

New fonts, image editing, custom translations

No

You, a designer, or a page builder

Building or restructuring landing and product pages

No

You, with a page builder, or an agency

Read down the right-hand column, and a pattern appears. Everything Shopify owns, Shopify fixes. Everything that makes your store look and convert differently from the next store on the same theme is yours to own, and that is not an oversight in their support policy. It is the boundary of the platform.

Which is worth planning around rather than discovering mid-chat. If the changes you keep needing are structural and one-off, hand them to a partner. If they are the layout and offer changes you expect to revisit every campaign, a page builder such as GemPages lets you make them without a developer and without touching theme code, so the next change does not start another support ticket.

Use the Right Channel and Know Where the Line Is

Most frustration with Shopify support comes from aiming at the wrong target. Chat is fast and open to everyone but gated behind AI Search and a login. Phone and email exist only on Plus and Retail. Social media is not a support channel at all, whatever a search result told you.

And the most useful thing to internalise is the scope boundary. Support keeps the platform working. Making your store sell better is your job, and knowing that in advance means you spend your energy on the second problem instead of arguing about the first.

FAQ about Shopify Support

How do I contact Shopify support?
Start in the Shopify Help Center, where AI Search is the documented first step. To reach a person, click the Chat with a human button in the bottom-right corner, then sign in to your store. Shopify requires you to be logged into your store to connect with a Support advisor, so chatting from a logged-out browser will not work.
Does Shopify have a support email address?
No, there is no public Shopify support email address. Email support requires your store to be on the Shopify Plus plan or the Retail plan, and even then you submit a ticket through the Help Center rather than writing to an address. Typical response time is around 48 hours. On any other plan, live chat is the equivalent.
Can I call Shopify support?
Yes, but only on some plans. Shopify states that you cannot request a callback or phone Shopify directly unless your store is on the Shopify Plus plan or the Retail plan, or uses Shopify POS Pro. Plus merchants get a direct line to Plus Support advisors. On Basic, Grow and Advanced there is no number to call.
Is Shopify support available 24/7?
Yes, with one qualification. Chat is listed as available 24 hours a day on every plan, and AI Search is the part Shopify guarantees most explicitly as available around the clock, every day of the year. You still join a queue for a human advisor, and you still need to be signed in to your store first.
Can I contact Shopify support on social media?
No, not as an official route. Shopify's contact page documents chat for all plans, with phone and email limited to Plus, Retail and POS Pro, and AI Search as the first step before a human. Facebook, X and Instagram are not among them, so posting there is not the same as opening a support ticket and should not be relied on for anything urgent.
Will Shopify support fix my theme or write custom code?
No. Shopify's design policy is explicit that Support does not write custom code or make arbitrary code changes. From the Basic plan up you get up to 60 minutes of complimentary design support in 15-minute increments, but only on free Shopify themes and only for a set of predefined changes. Adding fonts, editing images and editing the checkout are all outside scope.
Who supports a paid theme or a third-party app?
The developer, not Shopify. For paid third-party themes, support comes from the theme developer, and theme developers do not carry out customizations either, which is where most merchants get stuck. For third-party apps you contact the app developer directly. One useful detail: Shopify checks in after three days and contacts the developer again on your behalf if the issue is unresolved.
