Elevate Your eCommerce Game: Inside the Shopify Partner Program

Shopify changed how Partners get paid on 10 August 2026, and most guides still quote the old numbers. If you are weighing up whether the Partner Program is worth your time, the rates you find in a 2025 article will not match what you actually earn.

This guide covers the current earning model, the two partner tracks, all five tiers, and the signup process step by step. Every figure below comes from Shopify's own Partner documentation.

Key Takeaways

  • Since 10 August 2026, development store referrals pay 20% of the subscription fee plus 0.1% of eligible online GMV, and the earnings run for up to four years rather than indefinitely.

  • Plus and enterprise referrals are now a $2,500 one-time payment, not a recurring percentage.

  • App developers keep 100% of revenue on their first $1M, then 85%. Themes are a flat 85% with no threshold.

  • There are two tracks, Service and Technology, and five tiers from Registered up to Platinum. The old Shopify Plus Partner program was retired in December 2024.

  • The Shopify Affiliate Program is a separate program from the Partner Program, with its own signup and its own rates.

What is the Shopify Partner Program?

The Shopify Partner Program connects designers, developers, marketers and agencies with Shopify merchants who need help building and growing their stores. Partners earn from referrals, from apps and themes they sell, and from the services they bill clients directly.

If you work as a freelancer, marketer, developer, designer or agency, this is the formal route into the Shopify ecosystem. It is free to join, and joining gives you unlimited development stores to build in.

One distinction to get right early: the Shopify Affiliate Program is a separate program. Affiliates promote Shopify to an audience and earn on signups. Partners build and service stores. You can do both, but you sign up for them separately.

How the Shopify Partner Program Works

1. The two ways to partner with Shopify

Shopify sorts partners into two tracks. Which one you belong to decides what you can earn and how you qualify:

  • Service Track covers agencies, consultancies, and systems integrators. You bill merchants for consulting, design, development, and marketing work, and you earn referral income on the stores you set up.

  • Technology Track covers ISVs, app developers, and ERP vendors. You build apps and integrations that you sell through the Shopify App Store or Theme Store, and you earn a revenue share on each sale.

Service Track work runs from initial store setup and theme customization through to ongoing marketing. If that is the side you are on, our roundup of Shopify CRO experts and agencies shows how established service partners position and price themselves.

Technology Track partners build the apps merchants install on top of their theme. Full disclosure, since it is relevant here: GemPages is itself a Shopify Technology Partner, distributed through the App Store, so the revenue share figures in the next section are ones we work with directly.

Shopify says it powers millions of businesses in more than 175 countries, and the Partner Program is how outside specialists plug into that.

2. What Shopify Partners earn in 2026

Shopify changed the Partner earning model on 10 August 2026. The headline change is that referral income now includes a share of the merchant's GMV, and it runs for a fixed four-year window instead of continuing indefinitely. Deals signed before that date keep the old rates.

Activity What you earn Terms
Development store referrals 20% of the merchant's subscription fee, plus 0.1% of their eligible online GMV Runs for up to four years from the merchant's first paid invoice. The same rate applies on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Shopify Plus. GMV is capped at $100M per year and excludes B2B. Starter and Lite plans are not eligible.
Shopify Plus and enterprise referrals $2,500 one-time payment The merchant needs more than $5,000 in GMV and must have paid their first Plus invoice. It also applies when you move an existing merchant up to Plus.
Shopify App Store apps 100% of revenue on your first $1M, then 85%. Developers earning $20M or more on the App Store, or $100M or more in company revenue, receive 85% of all revenue. The $1M threshold is lifetime from 1 January 2025. It does not reset each year.
Shopify Theme Store themes 85% of all revenue No $1M threshold applies to themes, and theme revenue is not counted toward the app revenue share calculation.
POS Pro referrals $500 one-time activation bonus, plus a 20% POS Payments Profit Share The profit share runs for four years. Referred merchants must meet Shopify's qualifying requirements.
B2B Payments Profit Share 20% Runs for four years. Added under the August 2026 model.
Shop Pay off Shopify 0.1% of GPV Runs for one year. Added under the August 2026 model.

Two figures that circulate widely are worth correcting, because they will cost you money if you plan around them. There is no 80% app revenue tier, and there is no $1M threshold on themes. Themes are a flat 85% from the first sale.

Alongside the money, the program includes:

  • Referral bonuses on specific Shopify products such as POS Pro.

  • Training and certification through Shopify Academy, now structured as learning paths and Verified Skills badges rather than a fixed course list.

  • The developer community at community.shopify.dev, which replaced the old Partners and Developers forum.

  • Sales and marketing resources in the Partner toolkit.

  • Partner support by chat or email through your Partner account, available around the clock.

One thing worth knowing if referral income is the reason you are here: Shopify's 20% is not the only recurring stream in this ecosystem. App partners run their own programs, and the rates are often higher because the margin structure is different.

The GemPages Affiliate Program, for example, pays 40% on the first transaction and 25% recurring for the lifetime of the account, and it is designed for exactly the audience reading this: agencies, freelancers and creators who already work with Shopify merchants. Partner referrals and app affiliate income stack rather than compete.

3. The five partner tiers

Within each track, Shopify places partners on one of five tiers. Your tier decides which benefits and support you get:

Tier Who is here
Registered Everyone starts here. Free to join, unlimited development stores, access to Shopify Academy and the Partner Dashboard.
Select Partners with a track record of merchant referrals or app revenue.
Plus Higher volume partners working with larger merchants.
Premier Established partners with significant ecosystem contribution.
Platinum The top tier, reserved for the largest and most active partners.

Two program names you will still find in older guides no longer exist. The Shopify Plus Partner program was retired in December 2024, and Shopify Experts was retired in December 2023. The Technology Track tier branding was also retired at the end of 2025 and replaced by the Certified Technology Partner Program. If a guide tells you to qualify for Shopify Plus Partner status, it is out of date.

There is also no such thing as a Shopify Fulfillment Partner tier. Shopify sold its logistics business to Flexport in June 2023, so fulfilment is no longer a partner category. Read the full tier criteria in Shopify's Partner Program documentation.

Why Partners Join

Three benefits come up most often when partners explain why the program is worth the paperwork.

1. Income that is not tied to one client

Referral income keeps paying after a project ends. Build a store on a development store referral and you earn on that merchant's subscription and GMV for up to four years, whether or not you are still working with them.

App and theme revenue behaves the same way, at a much larger scale. Shopify does not publish an official store count, so treat the numbers you see quoted elsewhere with care. Its own language is that it powers millions of businesses in more than 175 countries, and third-party estimates of live store counts vary widely depending on how they are measured.

2. Access to Training and Resources

Shopify Partner Academy offerings from the website

One of the standout benefits of the program is the extensive training and resources available to help partners enhance their skills.

The Shopify Partner Academy is the crown jewel of the program's training offerings. This exclusive platform provides partners with a vast array of interactive courses, study guides, and exams designed to help them develop essential commerce skills. Academy is now organised as learning paths and Verified Skills badges rather than a fixed course list, with more than 80 courses covering theme development, app building with the Shopify CLI, Shopify Functions, business fundamentals and digital marketing. Course names change often enough that the Academy catalogue is the only reliable list.

The courses are self-paced and interactive, allowing partners to learn at their own convenience while applying their knowledge to real-world scenarios.

In addition to the Partner Academy, Shopify provides partners with a wealth of dedicated resources and support tools. This includes:

  • The Partner Dashboard: A centralized platform for managing client projects, accessing educational materials, and tracking earnings.
  • Partner Forums: Vibrant online communities where partners can connect with each other, share best practices, and seek support.
  • Partner Support: Chat or email support through your Partner account, available around the clock. There is no separate partner hotline or dedicated team.

3. Early Access to Features

Partners get early access to new features. This benefit is a significant advantage for partners, especially those who are certified or part of the Shopify Plus Partner program. This means that partners can test and implement the latest tools and updates before they are rolled out to the general public.

This proactive approach enables partners to stay ahead of the competition by offering cutting-edge solutions to their clients. By familiarizing themselves with new features in advance, partners can provide informed recommendations and optimize their clients' stores with the latest functionalities.

Furthermore, early access fosters a collaborative relationship between Shopify and its partners, as partners can provide feedback on new features, helping Shopify refine and improve its offerings. This enhances the partner's skill set and elevates their profile within the Shopify ecosystem, showcasing their commitment to staying updated with the platform's advancements.

Is the Shopify Partner Program Worth Joining in 2026?

For anyone already building or marketing Shopify stores, yes. It is free, it gives you unlimited development stores to work in, and referral income keeps paying for up to four years after a project ends.

Go in with the current numbers though, not the ones most guides still quote. Referral earnings are capped at four years now rather than running indefinitely, Plus referrals are a single $2,500 payment rather than a percentage, and two of the partner categories you will read about elsewhere no longer exist.

The other thing worth planning for is that Shopify referrals do not have to be your only recurring line. If you build stores for clients, the apps you install on those stores often run their own affiliate programs, and those stack on top of what Shopify pays you. The GemPages Affiliate Program is one example, at 40% on the first transaction and 25% recurring for the life of the account.

FAQs About the Shopify Partner Program

Is the Shopify Partner Program free to join?
Yes. There is no fee to join and no minimum commitment. Signing up gives you unlimited development stores to build in, access to Shopify Academy, and the Partner Dashboard for tracking referrals and earnings. You only start earning once a store you referred becomes a paying customer.
How much do Shopify Partners earn per referral?
For development store referrals you earn 20% of the merchant's subscription fee plus 0.1% of their eligible online GMV. Shopify Plus and enterprise referrals pay a flat $2,500 one-time payment instead of a percentage. GMV is capped at $100M per year and excludes B2B, and Starter and Lite plans are not eligible at all.
Do Shopify Partner commissions last forever?
No, and this changed recently. Since 10 August 2026, referral earnings run for up to four years from the merchant's first paid invoice, rather than continuing for as long as the merchant stays on Shopify. Deals signed before that date keep the older terms, so if you find a guide quoting indefinite recurring commission, check its publication date.
What percentage do app developers keep on the Shopify App Store?
You keep 100% of revenue on your first $1M, then 85% after that. The $1M threshold is lifetime from 1 January 2025 and does not reset each year, which catches a lot of developers out. Developers earning $20M or more on the App Store, or $100M or more in company revenue, receive 85% of all revenue with no threshold. There is no 80% tier, despite it appearing in many older articles.
How much do Shopify theme developers keep?
85% of all revenue, from the first sale onward. Unlike apps, themes have no $1M threshold and no 100% tier, so the figure is the same whether you sell one theme or a thousand. Theme revenue is also counted separately and does not roll into the app revenue share calculation.
Is the Shopify Affiliate Program the same as the Partner Program?
No. They are separate programs with separate signups. Affiliates promote Shopify to an audience and earn on signups, while Partners build and service stores and earn from referrals, apps and themes. You can join both if it suits how you work.
Does the Shopify Plus Partner program still exist?
No. Shopify retired it in December 2024, and retired the Shopify Experts program in December 2023. Partners now sit in one of two tracks, Service or Technology, across five tiers running from Registered up to Platinum. If a guide tells you to qualify for Shopify Plus Partner status, it is out of date.
Do I need to know how to code to become a Shopify Partner?
No. The Service Track covers agencies, consultancies and systems integrators who bill merchants for consulting, design and marketing work, none of which requires building apps. Coding matters for the Technology Track, where you build apps and integrations to sell through the App Store or Theme Store. Which track you belong to decides how you qualify and what you can earn from.
